한국학생들이 미국이나 캐나다 명문대학에 척척 합격하긴 해도 정작 졸업하기는 어려운 이유가 바로 영어 작문에 약하기 때문이라고 합니다. 그러나 2005년부터는 SAT시험에도 작문이 추가되어 쓰기 능력이 약하면 대학에 들어가기 조차도 힘들게 되어 있습니다. 미국의 대입시험인 SAT를 주관하는 College Board에서는 이러한 에세이 시험에 대한 대비방법으로 단연 다독을 권장하고  있습니다. 우선은 영어책 독서를 취미로 삼고 되도록 좋은 책을 골라 많이 읽고, 또한 깊이 읽을 것을 권장하여야 합니다.  College Board 홈페이지저의 아이들도 캐나다 학교에 적응과정을 자세히 지켜보면 ESL초기단계에서는 기본적인 영어에 대한 지식과 본격적인 영어로 말하기, 듣기환경에 적응하는 것이 주된 과제였습니다. 어느정도 적응이 되고 나면 이제는 영어로 말하기, 쓰기에 필요한 재료가 현저히 부족하다는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다. 그 재료들은 바로 표현과 단어, 이디엄 들입니다. 이러한 것들은 단기간에 쉽게 얻어지지 않고 수년간 많은 독서를 통해 이뤄져야 하는 것들입니다. 한국식 암기력으로 단기간에 많은 양을 외우는데 성공했다고 하더라도 그 기억이 오래 못갈뿐더러 실제상황에 사용하는데 어려움이 있는 경우가 많습니다. 그러므로 중급이상의 단계에서는 꾸준한 독서가 비약적 영어실력 향상의 관건이기 마련입니다.  그렇다면 어떤 책을 읽어햐 하는가 라는게 문제일 수 있는데 런던의 도서관에 몇차례 한국식의 '교육부 지정 청소년 추천 도서목록' 같은게 있느냐고 물어봤지만 얻을 수 없었고 여러가지 정보를 검색하는 중 유용할만한 도서목록을 찾게 되어 올립니다. 미국의 SAT담당 기관인 College Board추천 목록도 포함되어 있다고 합니다. 만약 한국에서 유학, 이민을 준비하고 계신다면 수준에 맞는 책을 골라 읽히기를 시작하신다면 많은 도움이 되리라 생각됩니다.  LEVEL11.
